Scandinavian Wooden Windows: The Nordic Tradition

Outward-opening windows are the standard in Scandinavia, where this design has been refined over generations. The sash opens outward on side or top hinges, keeping the interior window area clear and allowing rain to naturally sheet off the open sash rather than entering the room.

Historically, 95% of factory production has been destined for the Scandinavian market. This deep experience with Nordic building standards and climate requirements is built into every detail of the product, from hardware selection to timber treatment and weatherproofing.

The Scandinavian system uses ASSA ABLOY hardware (not GU), consisting of espagnolette locking mechanisms and lever handles. This is the hardware system specified across Nordic countries for outward-opening windows. Built on our Premium 115 profile system (115mm depth, dedicated specifically for outward-opening Scandinavian windows), in Pine, Oak, Meranti, or Larch - all engineered laminated timber for dimensional stability.

ASSA ABLOY Hardware

Espagnolette locking mechanism with lever handles, the standard specification for Scandinavian outward-opening windows. ASSA ABLOY is a global leader in door and window hardware, headquartered in Stockholm.

Aluminium Cladding Option

Optional exterior aluminium cladding protects the timber from weather exposure. Available in any RAL colour, with four standard options: White, Aluminium, Brown, Bronze. The aluminium profile is visible on the exterior section of the window.

Three Opening Systems

Scandinavian windows are available in three distinct opening configurations, each equipped with ASSA ABLOY fittings.

Side Swing

Reversible window with a vertical 180-degree revolving axis. Can be opened with hooks, forvriders, or a traditional handle. ASSA ABLOY fittings.

Top Swing

Fully reversible window with a horizontal 180-degree revolving axis. Handle mounted at the lower part of the sash. ASSA ABLOY fittings.

Side Hung

Window opening outwards on side hinges. Traditional Scandinavian style, ideal for living houses, farmsteads, and summerhouses. ASSA ABLOY fittings.

Scandinavian window detail

Built for Nordic Conditions

The outward-opening design has been the Scandinavian standard for practical reasons. When the sash opens outward, rain runs off the open window rather than entering the room. Snow and ice on the exterior surface do not prevent the window from opening. Interior furnishings, blinds, and curtains are not disturbed by the opening sash.

With the optional aluminium cladding, the exterior timber is fully protected from weather exposure. The interior remains warm natural wood, while the exterior requires virtually no maintenance. The aluminium profile is factory-fitted and available in any RAL colour to match the building facade.

Interior Sill GrooveMachined groove on the frame for precise interior sill connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Scandinavian windows open outward?

Wind pressure against the closed sash improves seal tightness. Rain sheets off the open sash. Snow and ice don't block the window from opening. Interior furnishings, blinds, and curtains remain undisturbed.

What is the difference between side swing, top swing, and side hung?

Side swing has a vertical 180-degree revolving axis and is fully reversible. Top swing has a horizontal 180-degree revolving axis with the handle at the bottom. Side hung opens outward on side hinges in the traditional Scandinavian style.

Why ASSA ABLOY and not GU hardware?

ASSA ABLOY is the Nordic standard for outward-opening windows, using espagnolette locking mechanisms and lever handles. GU hardware is used for inward-opening tilt and turn windows.

Can I add aluminium cladding?

Yes. Factory-fitted exterior aluminium cladding is available in any RAL colour. Standard options include White, Aluminium, Brown, and Bronze. The interior remains natural timber while the exterior is fully protected.

What wood species are available?

Pine, Oak, Meranti, and Larch. All engineered laminated timber for dimensional stability.

Are your Scandinavian windows suitable for the UK market?

Yes. Our windows hold glazing options and Secured by Design certification (UK Police Preferred Specification), along with CE, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001.

How much do Scandinavian wooden windows cost?

Our Scandinavian wooden windows are priced 30-40% below Scandinavian and German competitors while using identical materials (German GU hardware, Remmers finishes, Saint-Gobain glass). Prices start from approximately €550-750 per m² for standard ECO 68 profile and €950-1,400 per m² for flagship Premium 115 with quadruple glazing. Read more about our Latvian pricing advantage or request a detailed quote for your project.

Do you deliver Scandinavian wooden windows across the UK and Europe?

Yes. We ship Scandinavian wooden windows to 19+ countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, France, Iceland, and beyond to Canada and New Zealand. EU deliveries have no customs formalities. Lead time is typically 6-8 weeks from order confirmation to on-site delivery. Our Full-Cycle Service covers logistics, unloading, and optional professional installation.

Can I get a price list for Scandinavian wooden windows?

Because every Scandinavian wooden window is made to measure (bespoke size, profile, glazing, hardware, finish, and cladding), we do not publish a fixed price list. Instead, we prepare a detailed itemised quote within 48 hours based on your exact project specification. Use our online Window Configurator to build your specification in 12 steps, or contact our Kalnciems team directly.

Are your Scandinavian wooden windows good quality? Any reviews?

Our Scandinavian wooden windows are certified by independent European testing bodies: ISO 9001:2015 quality management, CE Marking under EN 14351-1, PAS 24 security, and Secured by Design (UK Police Preferred Specification). All 41 independent test reports are published on our certifications page. We have delivered to architects, developers, and homeowners across 19+ countries since 1890, including certified Passive House projects. See examples in our project portfolio.
