What EI-30, EI-45 and EI-60 Mean

Fire resistance ratings follow the European classification system where E stands for integrity (preventing flame passage) and I stands for insulation (limiting temperature rise on the unexposed side).

EI-30 means the window maintains both integrity and insulation for 30 minutes during a standardised fire test. EI-45 extends that protection to 45 minutes, and EI-60 delivers a full hour of certified fire resistance. These ratings come from full-scale tests where a complete window assembly is exposed to temperatures following the ISO 834 standard fire curve, reaching over 800 degrees Celsius.

During these critical minutes, the window prevents fire and superheated gases from spreading between compartments, giving occupants time to evacuate and emergency services time to respond.

EI-30 Classification

30 minutes of fire integrity and thermal insulation. Suitable for most residential fire separation requirements and standard commercial applications.

Tested per EN 1364-1, classified per EN 13501-2

EI-45 Classification

45 minutes of certified fire protection. Required for higher-risk applications including corridors, stairwells, and buildings with longer evacuation times.

Tested per EN 1364-1, classified per EN 13501-2

EI-60 Classification

A full hour of certified fire protection. Specified for stairwells, escape routes, and buildings with longer evacuation requirements. Our maximum standard certified rating.

Tested per EN 1364-1, classified per EN 13501-2. Custom orders up to EI-90 available for specialised projects.

EN 16034: The European Standard

EN 16034 is the harmonised European product standard for pedestrian doorsets, industrial doors, and windows with fire-resisting and smoke control characteristics. It became mandatory for CE marking of fire-rated windows across the EU.

Compliance means our fire rated timber windows are legally accepted in every EU member state, as well as in EEA countries including Norway and Switzerland. Architects and specifiers can reference a single, consistent standard regardless of where the building project is located.

TUV EESTI Independent Certification

Our fire rated windows are tested and certified by TUV EESTI, an accredited independent testing body operating under the TUV international framework. Every test involves a physical specimen, standardised fire exposure, and documented measurement of integrity and insulation performance.

The TUV EESTI mark provides confidence to architects, building inspectors, and insurance assessors that the stated fire performance is independently verified.

Where Fire Rated Windows Are Required

European building regulations mandate fire-resistant windows in specific locations to prevent fire spread between compartments:

Real Wood That Passes Fire Tests

A common misconception is that fire rated windows must be steel or aluminium. Timber has inherent fire-resistant properties: when wood burns, it forms a charcoal layer that insulates the unburned timber beneath, slowing combustion.

Our fire rated windows use engineered laminated timber profiles designed to exploit this natural behaviour. Combined with fire-resistant glazing and intumescent seals that expand when heated, the complete assembly achieves EI-30, EI-45 or EI-60 certified performance.

Fire-resistant configurations are available on all three profile systems: ECO 68 (68mm, inward tilt and turn), ECO 92 (92mm, inward tilt and turn), and Premium 115 (115mm, outward Scandinavian). Add optional aluminium cladding for zero exterior maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get fire rated timber windows?

Yes. Our timber windows are certified EI-30, EI-45, and EI-60 by TUV EESTI, tested to EN 16034. Fire-resistant configurations are available on all three profile systems: ECO 68, ECO 92, and Premium 115. Custom orders up to EI-90 are available for specialised projects.

What is the difference between EI-30, EI-45 and EI-60?

EI-30 provides 30 minutes of fire integrity and thermal insulation. EI-45 provides 45 minutes, and EI-60 provides a full hour. The number indicates how long the window prevents fire and superheated gases from passing through during a standardised fire test (ISO 834 curve, temperatures exceeding 800 degrees). Choose based on your building regulations and risk assessment.

Do fire rated timber windows look different from standard windows?

No. Our fire rated timber windows look and feel identical to standard timber windows: warm natural wood inside, the same window profiles, timber species options, the same paint and lacquer finishes. The fire-resistant glazing and intumescent seals are not visible. This makes them ideal for heritage and listed buildings where metal frames would be unacceptable.

What glass is used in fire rated windows?

Fire rated windows use special fire-resistant glazing that maintains integrity under extreme heat. The glass contains interlayers that foam and opacify when exposed to fire, providing both insulation and blocking radiant heat transfer. Standard Low-E coatings and triple glazing are combined with the fire-resistant properties.

Are fire rated windows required for residential buildings?

In many cases, yes. European building regulations require fire rated windows in apartment corridors, stairwells, party wall openings, and windows near property boundaries. Requirements vary by country and building type. Contact us with your project details for specific guidance.

Can I add aluminium cladding to fire rated windows?

Yes. Optional aluminium exterior cladding is available in any RAL colour. This gives you fire-rated timber performance inside with zero-maintenance aluminium outside. Ideal for multi-storey buildings where both fire safety and low maintenance are required.
